As the University's open-access digital repository, The Knowledge Box plays an important role in supporting research and scholarly communications campus-wide. The Open Access Advantage

Studies suggest that articles available freely online are more likely to be discovered, read, and cited later on. For example, in a 2008 study, researchers from Cornell University discovered that in the first six months after publication, Open Access articles had 89% more full-text downloads than subscription articles.¹ Open Access research also impacts scientists and researchers in the developing world. Researchers from the University of Chicago in 2009 used quantitative data to prove that Open Access articles are much more likely to be cited in poorer countries,² thus benefiting scientists and those not associated with large institutions.

Mission Statement 

The Knowledge Box is a digital repository that captures, maintains, preserves, and provides access to Georgia College’s intellectual capital in addition to supporting its teaching and research missions. The Knowledge Box, an initiative of the Ina Dillard Russell Library, demonstrates the university’s dedication to engage and enrich local and global intellectual communities by “connecting what matters” through avenues not currently supported by traditional library and publication methods. The Knowledge Box serves to enhance and perpetuate Georgia College’s legacy and make it discoverable to all. 

Collecting Priority Statement 

The Georgia College Knowledge Box focuses on collecting the intellectual capital of Georgia College, its students, faculty and staff. Priority is given to digitally formatted materials for which the owner has copyright and for which the owner is willing to grant the Knowledge Box nonexclusive preservation and distribution rights as described in the submission license. Materials collected range from student research activities, such as thesis and capstone projects, hosted peer reviewed journals, such as The Corinthian, archival materials, course materials, and published journal articles written by any member of the university community.
