Scope and Content

The Floyd L. Griffin, Jr. papers consists of five series spanning his career in the Army, Georgia General Assembly, office of Mayor of Milledgeville, and position of President and CEO of Slater's Funeral Home, as well as momentos from his induction to the Tuskegee University ROTC Hall of Fame and Winston Salem State Football Hall of Fame, his civic organizations, and family gatherings. The first seires comprises 25 scrapbook and photo albums in 19 flat boxes comprising Griffin's service in the Army to family photographs from 2010. The second series contains Griffin's papers in 4 Hollinger boxes. These papers range from his time spent in the military to commendations and inaugural invitations. Series three is one box of photographs, containing pictures from the 1960s to 2010s. Of particular note in this collection are the two folders from Griffin's time in the Georgia General Assembly that contain photographs of Griffin with notable people like James Brown, Danny Glover, Rev. Al Sharpton, and national and state political figures including President Bill Clinton, (then) First Lady Hillary Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Senator Max Cleland, and (then) Governor Zell Miller. Series four contains framed photographs, posters, awards, and objects related that span Griffin's career, including pictures of him with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. The fifth series contains books donated to Special Collections related to Griffin's lifelong commitment to public service.
