Media Literacy & AI: AI, Algorithms, & Information Ethics

Introducing research and media literacy to help students develop essential skills for navigating the information landscape, evaluating sources, & understanding how media influences public opinion, with a focus on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Interdisciplinary Ethical Considerations

How do you feel about AI systems that can generate original pop culture media like art, music, etc.? What are the implications?

If AI can analyze media and flag potential issues, does this change people's responsibilities? What role should automation play vs. human discretion?

What challenges and opportunities do you see AI presenting for the future of research? How might access or integrity change?

What questions should media studies, psychology, etc., experts be asking about AI systems to ensure ethical development?

What are the tradeoffs between customizing information streams for relevance vs. showing users a diversity of content? How do algorithms currently handle this?

Who should oversee ethical guidelines for algorithms influencing the culture? What transparency is needed?
