Travis Edwin Smith was born in Gilmer County, Georgia on October 16, 1898 to William Benjamin and Anna Roxie Smith. He received his A.B. and M.A. degree from Mercer University followed by a Ph.D. at Peabody College for Teachers in 1932. Dr. Smith served as Registrar for the Georgia State College for Women. He was also the Sub-Director of General Extension and a Professor of Education during his tenure. He retired as Registrar of Georgia College in 1964. He was married to Lavane A. Smith and had three children, Helen, Jan and Laura.
