Open Access

This guide introduces Open Access (OA) for students and faculty.

How do I make my work open access?

Do you want to make your own article open access?  Here are the steps you need to take:

Check Your Rights

  • Review your publishing agreement. Many journals allow authors to share accepted manuscripts in other repositories, like GCSU's Knowledge Box. (Green OA).
  • Use Open Policy Finder to confirm what version you can share and any embargo periods.

Deposit in a Repository

  • Institutional Repository: Upload your accepted manuscript to your university’s repository. The Knowledge Box is GC&SU's repository.
  • Subject Repository: See the Disciplinary Repositories page from Simmons University. .

Apply an Open License

  • Add a Creative Commons license (e.g., CC BY) to clarify reuse rights.

Share on Your Website or Profile

  • Post the allowed version on your personal site, ORCID profile, or institutional page (if permitted by your publisher).

Consider Publisher Options

  • Some journals allow you to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) for Gold OA.
  • Check if your library has Read & Publish agreements that cover APCs for you.
