Participants will discuss Fatima Mernissi's memoir about her youth in a Moroccan harem during the 1940s.
Georgia College will host a free five-part scholar-led reading and discussion series called Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys. During the series, participants will explore the histories, faith, and cultures of Muslims around the world and within the United States through informed conversations facilitated by local scholars.
The series is open to all adults in the community and will be led by Dr. Mary Magoulick and Dr. Claudia Yaghoobi of Georgia College.

In May 2013, the Georgia College Library was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the American Library Association (ALA) to host a five-part reading and discussion series titled Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys. The GC Library is one of only 125 libraries and state humanities councils across the country selected to participate in the project, which seeks to familiarize public audiences in the United States with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world. The Muslim Journeys theme that the Library has chosen to explore is Points of View.
An introductory meeting will be held on August 26 at 6:30PM. The first four programs will be held in the Anne Moore Children's Theatre at the Mary Vinson Memorial Library. A book will be discussed once every six weeks at the Mary Vinson Memorial Library. These books are In the Country of Men (October 7, 2013); Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood (November 18, 2013); House of Stone (January 13, 2014); Broken Verses (February 24, 2013); and Dreams of Trespass (April 7, 2014). The Dreams of Trespass discussion will be held at the Pat Peterson Museum Education Room in the Georgia College Museum.
Dr. Mary Magoulick and Dr. Claudia Yaghoobi, both of Georgia College, will lead a discussion of one book at each session. Dr. Magoulick developed and teaches a course for Georgia College on Literature of the Islamic World. Dr. Yaghoobi specializes in modern and medieval Persian and English mystical literature from a modern comparative and theoretical perspective, as well as Iran Armenian studies.
All of the books to be discussed in this series are part of the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys. The books and films comprising the Bookshelf were selected with the advice of librarians and cultural programming experts, as well as distinguished scholars in the fields of anthropology, world history, religious studies, interfaith dialogue, the history of art and architecture, world literature, Middle East studies, Southeast Asian studies, African studies, and Islamic studies.
