Georgia College History

Changing Campus

The campus of Georgia College & State University, originally known as Georgia Normal & Industrial College, had very humble beginnings. The college began with one building, the Old Governors Mansion and the abandoned site of the State Penitentiary. From this it has grown into a campus that comprises all of the former Penitentiary Square, many historic sites around Milledgeville, and property known as West Campus on the 441 Bypass.
